Hatha yoGa

What is it?

Hatha yoga can be consider an umbrella term to describe many of the most common forms of yoga taught in the west today.

With this type of yoga, you move your body slowly and deliberately into different poses that challenge your strength and flexibility; while at the same time focusing on relaxation and mindfulness.

Hatha Yoga places special emphasis on controlled breathing and posture. Building core strength, which is key to good posture; this is another important aspect of this type of yoga practise.

There are hundreds of poses, including well-known ones such as Downward-Facing dog and Standing forward bend. Poses are usually held for several breaths before you move onto the next.

Vinyasa YoGA

What is it?

Vinyasa connects one posture to the next using the breath. This can be thought of as a linking or flowing into postures which is sometimes why it is called flow Yoga.

Vinyasa is synonymous with movement. Moving in and out of postures is the obvious movement, but even in stillness it is represented by the beat of your heart and inhale/exhale of your breath. Breath initiates the movement, which is why you’ll hear it referred to as a breath-synchronized practice

Ujjayi is the breathing technique used. It is done by inhaling and exhaling in a rhythmic manner through the nose, the overall sensation is one of relaxation.

Vinyasa practice generated heat and can add a cardiovascular component not always present in other forms of postural practice.

Yin Yoga

What is it?

Yin is a quiet contemplative practice. It works deeply into our body with passive longer held poses. It targets the deepest tissues of the body – our connective tissues, ligaments, joints, bones, deep fascia networks of the body and the meridians.

This in contrast to a yang practise such as Vinyasa which targets the muscles. Energetically, Yin yoga improves the energy flow enhancing the flow of chi in the organs. Yin yoga offers wonder emotional and mental health benefits.

What is it?

Restorative Yoga is a practise for the nervous system. Quiet, Slow, releasing and supportive.  We create space to go deep, to allow and to move into acceptance.  Creating a safe container to allow constructive rest, a shift from being in the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight), into the parasympathetic nervous system were the body naturally rests and digest. It basically undoes the work of sympathetic division after a stressful situation. The parasympathetic nervous system decreases respiration and heart rate and increases digestion.
